BACKGROUND: In 2000 Elmbridge Council placed a memorial to Flt. Sgt, Charles Sydney whose Spitfire was shot down down on 27th September 1940 over Station Avenue during the Battle of Britain.
After the memorial was vandalised in 2010, volunteers and Councillors decided to form ‘The Friends of Charles Sydney RAF’ and to hold a short memorial service every year for all those lost in conflict on or around the September anniversary. Since then the group of volunteers have created the small area for ‘quiet reflection’ together with a dedicated bench and flower bowers handmade by a local volunteer. |
