Tree Planting - Felix Road Recreation Ground
A group of local residents came together on December 5th and planted over 100 trees and several bags of bulbs. Lots of fun was had and the weather was kind to us! Fantastic community effort all round but especially from Gaynor and her team who organised the whole event. Also big thanks to the 1st Walton Viking Sea Scouts for the refreshments. We can't wait to see them grow over the years and provide all-year colour. Thanks everyone for helping make this happen!
Background
Following a false start due to Covid restrictions the residents of Dudley Road made a successful application to The Woodlands Trust for 105 sapling trees to plant in Felix Road Recreation Park. We consulted with the Greenspaces Officer at the Council and the trees are being delivered at some point in November, dependent on logistics.
The trees include Hawthorn, Dogwood, Wild Cherry, Silver birch, Rowan and Hazel - a year round colour pack. The planting team are currently trying to rustle up some more local support and we are keen to have other neighbours involved. The Sea Scouts, who have a hut in the park, are already involved.
Neighbours from Felix road, Thames Mead, Franklyn Road and any one else that uses the park are invited to join in.
The team have gone a step further and Squires Garden Centre have very kindly donated a whole load of daffodils to plant, so it should be really pretty once it becomes established.
Once the plans were underway it was discovered that the council had also applied for funding to plant a lot more saplings in the park and now both groups are working together to make the park a more appealing space. There will still be plenty of space to play football and run around. Of course not all the trees will survive but everyone involved is determined to try their hardest to support them to flourish...with a little help.
If you can help, please fill in the form below. If you plan to join us with the planting on the day - if possible - please bring along: spade, trowel, mallet (for canes) and wear appropriate clothing. Don't worry if you're missing equipment there will be a small supply to borrow.
If you'd like more information, also just fill in the form and the team will be in touch.
